Chapter One

Lure Series

At this stage in my art studies, I began a large series of works based around a central theme - fish and fishing lures portrayed in ways suggesting they were of profound importance. As a visual artist, the balance, colors, and form of a piece are equally important as the symbolism, but with this series I became obsessed with the concept of what symbols really are. I tried to challenge every aspect of their context.

I did over a 100 works in this series, with some of the better ones presented here. I used oil pastels, dry pastels, pencil, charcoal, crayon, collage, paint, fingernail polish, melted wax, and chalk. I worked on paper, cardboard, adhesive laminate, foil, newsprint, photographs, maps, textbook pages, and dollar bills. In short, almost everything I could get my hands on to test the imagery I was exploring.
